In Defense of Christians (IDC) congratulates Mike Pompeo on his confirmation as the 70th Secretary of State. Secretary Pompeo has been an advocate for Christian and other religious minority communities who suffer persecution in the Middle East, even participating in the 2016 IDC Summit. Formerly a member of Congress, Secretary Pompeo represented the Kansas fourth District which has a large diaspora community of Middle East Christians with which he regularly met. We are encouraged to hear that Secretary Pompeo realizes the importance of the Middle East and has already scheduled a visit. We urge him to use the influence of the United States to hold countries accountable for their treatment of minority religious communities, and to constantly remind the leadership of our partners in the region that the American people are deeply committed to human rights and religious freedom. We look forward to working with Secretary Pompeo to ensure that Christian and other religious minority communities have a safe and stable future in the Middle East.
